I don't know what I have done wrong. I click on run_b3.py but then it just asks me what I want to open it with... Is there something i'm missing or have I screwed something up?

You don't click on run_b3.py. You have to run python.exe with command lines. See the B3 website, specifically this section on running B3: http://wiki.bigbrotherbot.net/installation:running_b3

For example, make a shortcut or batch file in your B3 folder that does this:

c:\python27\python.exe ./b3_run.py -c b3\conf\b3.xml

I'm 100% sure that I double click it several times a day to start it.

If yours doesn't work like that, then you messed up your file associations. Make python.exe the dafault application for .py files.

I have set up MANY B3's in my time and I've always started it PER THE DIRECTIONS on the B3 homepage, using a shortcut or batch file. You should specify where the b3.xml file is located in the command line arguments. I also have my B3's running as a service with UGCC, just like my servers.

You only need arguments when running multiple servers, wich is not OP's case.

If you look carefully, he says that b3_run.py has no file association. So, the the first thing we need to know is if OP has installed python 2.7 or not.

...and that's what happens when people follow guides posted here instead of on the B3 website when they already have a very well written, comprehensive guide to installing B3. The guide from the B3 website clearly states that to run B3, you should be using command line arguments.

And that's what happens when you follow generic tutorials and don't give yourself the work to try anything else than what you're told to do. You would need to run python with arguments if you were running it on a linux based os. So, the way they explained there works for all operating systems.

On windows, .py file extension is associated with python, after you install it. So, a double click does run a python file.

I understand that you must use shortcuts because you run more than one server. Just don't push that in here, because this topic is about RivalButter's problem, and that one has nothing to do with shortcuts or batches.

Either OP didn't install python 2.7 or the file association didn't get created for some reason.

I run a separate B3 install for each server. I use command line parameters because I run B3 as a process through UGCC.

Any serious server admin will set up B3 as a process, so double clicking a .py file won't work for them. Encouraging people to run servers on their home PC's, which includes double clicking on the .py file shouldn't be "pushed" here. It leads to poor quality servers. So many people have problems with B3 because they try to follow the tutorial written by users here rather than the one provided by the developers of B3, who know what they are talking about.

People who can't afford a vps also have the right to run their own server. It's up the the users to choose in wich server they play.

As for what is on b3 website... most people who run b3 on windows, run the compiled version. The python version is ment for people who know what they're doing or people who run linux operating systems. Since the python version is mostly used on linux operating systems, they explain it how to launch it through python with arguments.

Not sure where you got that data, but for years now, I've always run B3 on a Windows VPS or dedicated server and I've only used the Python version. I would assume most people running B3 probably use the python version because of it's ability to use new updates and parsers.
