I was curious if anyone knew if there were any incompatibilities between the *.DEMO files used on the Xbox 360 and the PC versions of MW3.

After a little trial and error, I got IW5M to work in tip top condition, but I didn't really download it to play on my PC (not primarily anyways). I was hoping I'd be able to use the *.DEMO files (for those of you that do not know, a *.DEMO file is a file that contains pointers and directions that tells a game how to replay a replay) from my Xbox and play them on the PC version to capture them on something like FRAPS, circumventing the 30 second clip limit of ELITE and allowing my to record in a higher resolution (and creating montages and such).

I copied the files to a thumb drive easy enough. I extracted them to my hard drive easily enough. I pasted them into the /%demo%/ directory, but they mysteriously disappear somewhere between booting MW3 and getting to the Theater.

Any insight would be wonderful. (:

It should work unless they drastically changed the demo format. It should just be a stream of engine information. Not sure if there is a difference in headers or something that is causing it do delete it or if its just part of the game.

That was what I was expecting. Research as proved unfruitful, however, but I still find it odd that this is the case (the lack of information, that is).

Alternatively, get a capture card, as 720p is good enough.

I would love to have a capture card, since they can record audio as well as video, so fun reactions can be shared as well, however, they're really expensive. ):

Seeing it in the long run, it's not quite that expensive for the quality you get.

Most capture cards capture and encode on the fly, this saves you money on software licenses and you can perform minor edits with FOSS tools. Besides, the capture card will work on PC (Win, Lin, DOS) and every console to follow (granted no idiotic HDMI restrictions are put in).

I have the Colossus HD, not a wise investment, though, as they are stuck in 1997, though the card functions like any other on the market, driver issues are fucking it over and that's why I didn't recommend it.

And yes, you can capture live without their fucked up anims in demo playback Not to mention that demo playback not only fcuks up, but sometimes omits entirely...

Granted, but 100+ dollars is still a large sum of money to drop at one time on a hobby.

I know a lot of people complain about frame drops and glitches in Theater Replays, but I rarely have any problems with that (unless there were problems pertaining to the game - such as lag). Though, the whole 'I didn't feel like recording that game' thing is annoying, I also rarely have that happen. More often than not, I forget to save them to my Vault before I forget they exist.

Also, the closest I got to anything regarding this topic in my research was a gaming league that required the upload of *.DEMO files as an anti-cheating precaution, but that would really just be PC-to-PC, which isn't all that unfathomable.

Guess I'm downloading a Hex Editor. :i

I don't have enough posts to post a link to my SkyDrive and the file is bigger than the maximum attachment size. Would you like me to PM you the link?

There are definite discernible similarities between the the couple of PC *.DEMOs I acquired as well as the Xbox *.DEMOs from my console (as well as some archetypal ones between the two platforms), but I can't seem to get the right combination of markers to make it work.
