I read that the friends list in IW4M is integrated with the Steam friends list... to add a friend must they be your friend on Steam?

 

If that's so, is there any danger that Valve could detect that I'm playing with a pirated game using their platform and ban me? And if not, is there any specific place I have to put the game folder, like "steamapps\common" or whatever?

You don't need to be afraid. Nothing will happen. And no, the game folder doesn't need to be in a specific directory. I got it on my desktop. When I start IW4M, steam says that I'm playing MW2. But nothing will happen, because IW4M doesn't use the original Matchmaking that is VAC secured.
