Photoshop (for improved quality):

 

1. Import your image, go to the menubar, press "Image" followed by "Image size.."1.png

 

2. Select the image size, which in this case would be 100x100.2.png

 

3. Hit "OK" and save your picture by pressing "File" followed by "Save for Web..."

4. Select the filetype "PNG-24" and hit save.

You're now ready to upload the resized avatar, enjoy.
