There was another theory (Around 7 of them), that calculated the Apocalypse in July 2012. It had proofs like the Mayan Calander ended in 2012. Even Bible also indicated the end-of-world around this period.

The Mayan calender uses a completely different calender system than our traditional calender. December 21 just marks the end of Baktun 13, and the beginning of Baktun 14.

 

From what I remember reading about baktuns and the Mayan Calender, the beginning of a Baktun was much like the beginning of a new year to the Mayans, and marked a time of celebration.

Some people would argue that the Mayan calender also doesn't account for leap year, but since they use a different system entirely I'm not sure if that is a valid argument.
