IW4M: How to properly record demos

Опубликовано:

First of all, keep in mind: this is a basic tutorial! It is meant for people who are unfamiliar with demo recording. This is also a reason for the large amount of photos, to make sure it is easy to follow.

If many people appreciate this tutorial, I will think about creating a more advanced one later on, which will include the use of timescale, movie configs, third person, and many other movie making tricks!

Here are a couple of things you'll need:

- Fully working copy of IW4M

- Sufficient knowledge on how to use the ingame console

- Recording program (FRAPS, for example)

- A computer capable of recording gameplay at say at least 30 frames per second

______________________________________________________________________________________

Right, let's get started.

Start IW4M, then simply join any server*. I'm sure you know how this works.

Next, once you're done loading, open the ingame console using the ~ key on your keyboard. This key is located above the "Tab" key.

Type

/record (demoname)

in the console, hit enter, and press ~ to close the console again.

record.png

You will notice some text popped up telling you it's recording the demo, as well as the filesize, all in the bottom left corner.

Example-2.png

Next, you can play until you decide to stop recording again. (Or at the end of a match, keep in mind that you CANNOT leave a demo recording inbetween maps!)

To stop recording, open the console using ~ once again, then type

/stoprecord

and hit enter.

stoprecord.png

Once that's done, your demo will now be located in the m2demo/demos folder*, which should be in your Modern Warfare 2 folder.

Now onto playing back and recording your demo.

For this tutorial, I will be using FRAPS as it is one of the most commonly used programs for recording gameplay, it is also the one I'm most familiar with.

As for the settings, I've used the following:

2b026b8ff2373a887bc92312824e661c.png

If you have any trouble using these settings, feel free to tune them! Use whatever works best for you.

Now that that's set up, let's move on to the actual recording part.

From the main menu, press ~ to open the console, then type

/demo demoname;wait 5;demoback 1

iw4m2012-05-2522-51-21-71.png

Your demo will now load, and start playing all by itself.

Now simply hit the button you use to start recording, and stop recording once the demo has ended.

Here's how it'll turn out:

And that's pretty much all there is to it! Now you can go ahead and edit the video however you'd like!

Good luck!

* This also includes servers running any mod, however, it does not work on legacy (aRev servers).

* If the demo has been recorded on a server with a mod, the demo will be somewhere in the mods folder in the Modern Warfare 2 folder instead.

Few tips and tricks:

Do you record alot? Use binds to make things easier!

Type this in the console:

/bind (key) record /bind (key) stoprecord

This thread will be updated every now and then.

FAQ:

Ever when I try to play back a demo, I get "lost connection to host".

- You have most likely recorded the demo on a legacy (aRev) server, which doesn't work. If this isn't the case, double check and see if you have a harrier strike, or any airstrike equipped as one of your killstreaks. This message gets triggered when calling in one of these killstreaks.

You can try this to 'rescue' your demo: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24772&p=205976#p205976

Hi, How do you load a demo that is located in the mods folder? Because when I do /demo demo0000 it says that it couldn't find that file.

Greetings.

Move your demo to your m2demo/demos folder.

Edited out a bit, gosh this forum seriously needs a spoiler option .__.

Thanks!

Edited title, stickied :)

I want to unsticky it, just because its in my thread, and my thread is stickied...

Edit: Unstickied.

Number 20 in my thread.

Even though it is, people won't search through a problem/error/fixes thread and will just simply look for this thread if they want to record demos. I strongly reccomend we keep this as a sticky.

But how often do people make a new thread for how to demo record? Not very often, as for the lost connection error, if we have a fix for that, and it was in my thread, and people STILL posted about it, THEN i would make it a sticky, but this, at this very moment, does not need to be stickied.

I also have the problem with "Lost connection to host". Is there already a solution?

Yes there is. But the problem is that ALL the demos recorded before this solution won't work. :/

Just go to your in-game console and insert /devmap mp_terminal . Since we are fixing the demos, insert on the console /record terminalfix .

Then record for some time, at least 30 sec. Then stop recording and disconnect.

After disconnecting insert on the console /demo terminalfix .

Let it play a bit and when it starts playing the demo, only after you start moving, you can disconnect and record every time, in all servers. :D

Hope you find this helpful. (:

Hi

Two things

1: Thanks a lot to r1fl3Man for this info. Useful way to keep recording your game to either catch cheaters or prove your innocence.

2: How do I navigate and jump in time in a demo? /cl_demoForwardJump 100 for example seems to do nothing. I'm guessing that 100 are frames. I guess it's part of the advanced tutorial.

Anywa, thanks again :)

Aww :3, thanks.

You should leave cl_demoForwardJump to the default value and use /demoforward 5000, /demoback 5000 (or any number) instead.

I will probably create the advanced tutorial soon.

This is a known bug, when you call in a harrier it crashes the demo for a reason that I don't know... :/ There's nothing you can do at this point to save the demo, just avoid using the harrier next time.

Would it be possible to fix this, though? I hope so.

I have a question How do I "delete" the recordings beacause I did some tests and the demo's name is like demo0009 or something how can I turn them back to demo0000

goto m2demo/demos or if you where recording with a mod goto the mod folder and they will be there
