Hey guys, I've been trying to setup a server for the last day or so.. also tried to get my client to work, but can't seem to do so.

Followed the instructions here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2151

And nothing seems to work. I'm getting this error: Steam must be running to play this game

Obviously, I tried it with Steam online, offline, and closed.

Would appreciate any help,

STEALTH

Have you tried NOT running aIW? Thats the norm. Make sure you have installed it correctly. I might add this error to my post later on...

I'm not running alterIW. I copied and pasted my steam installation of Modern Warfare 2, into a new folder. Downloaded the install file, and it extracted and whatnot into the MW2 copied installation. (as instructed). Then i run iw3mp.exe and it gives that error.

"iw3mp.exe" is Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare 1, but thats most likely a typing error and you mean "iw4mp.exe". And there's the fault: you have to run "LaunchIW4M.exe".

@Mokbara Yes, it was a typo. I played a lot of cod4, forgot the difference.

@lmaobox

Well, it doesn't give me a window to actually log in. (attempting to run the game with steam closed)

I just got this error right now..

Well it looks like you're Internet timed out before finishing the download. Try download m2demo, raw, and iw4m.dll and if you do that you the DL will be a lot shorter and faster.

There is no raw. And the rest are hidden in appdata for a reason.

I figured out why it kept disconnecting from the main server, and why the files wouldn't download. I have a 'web filter' running... and it runs on keywords and it also filters certain files. I just disabled it and it downloaded everything and it works now.

I also had this exact issue with my dedicated server. Ran an update, disabled some software and it now works.

Thank you guys for your prompt responses.

Maybe I spoke too soon?

After I got the server working, I had to copy and paste the server folder a few times, to make new servers. But now when I try to start any server up, I get this error..

Any idea how to fix it?

start launchiw4m.exe as admin

Same error. :/

Nope. I know how to fix it. Its cause by either moving your IW4M files out of appdata/local/iw4m , or a bad installation. It is always caused because of a directory being moved, misplaced, deleted, etc. Reinstalling should fix the problem. Also, this was in my post that is stickied at the top.
