Requesting help with PCIe and ViDock!

Опубликовано:

Me, being a half-noob as usual have been wondering if it is possible to connect a PCIe express card to a laptop without an express port. Is there such thing as a PCIe to USB adapter or something like that? :?:

The reason I am asking this is because I wanted to use something called ViDock to use an external graphics card with my laptop which connects it via PCIe express card and I realized I may not be able to do this because I don't have an express port. If there is a solution related to the fact I'm using ViDock instead of the fact I don't have an express port with my laptop please tell me that too. Note: I AM WILLING to connect to an external monitor FROM my laptop while using ViDock.

Here are my specs ( just in case you need them):

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

2.3 ghz processor speed (It's intel, but I usually use a secondary AMD processor that is faster)

I also have 3 currently available USB 2.0 ports (but please tell me if the solution will need 3.0 though because I can still deal with that.)

Thanks a TON!!, lawler1337 :D

P.S. If you need to ask me questions regarding my problem that can help you solve it feel free to ask.

There is no way to use Vidock through USB 2.0 the available bandwith (480mbps)is not enough however USB 3.0 might be enough for low to mid range gfx cards but pci-e is not capable with USB. There is a PCI-E mini slot on laptops usually (where the wi-fi adapter is located) look a this wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Expres ... _interface the picture shows a mini PCIe card. It offers a bandwith of 2.5gbps the same as Expressport. You just need to get a Mini PCIe cable when you buy a ViDock. The last alternative is the Thunderbolt Connector providing you with 10gbps ( double of USB 3.0) but you probably dont have that cause its only on Mac and high-end Z77 motherboards. To sums it up the best way is Mini-PCIe

Ok, so I have a pretty good idea on what I'm gonna do now, which is a DIY ViDock because I think the ViDock may be a bit too expensive. I know I can connect an external graphics card to my laptop via miniPCIe now using a PE4L or PE4H but I still don't know which one to use so I can connect my external graphics card. What I want to do with my graphics card is play games like BF3 at around high/ultra with a highly playable FPS with a budget. Sounds absurd right, well I think this may be possible with an ATI Radeon HD 5770, right? If I'm wrong please give me some examples on some cards that could handle BF3 @ those settings that are about $200 or less. On the website I'll post a link to down below it says there's different setups with the mPCIe ports that can affect performance I believe and I don't quite understand it to me so I'm requesting an English version

So, overall I need some tips on how exactly I can setup a DIY ViDock for my system using a 5770 or something like that.

Here are my specs:

Pavilion dv7-6135dx Entertainment PC (you may have seen it at Best Buy, that's where I got it.)

Windows 7 Home Premium

8 GB RAM

I Have 2 Processors:

Intel Core i5-2410m @2.3ghz

and, also also a secondary Radeon graphics which is overall faster and I mainly use it but I don't know the exact specs

I believe I have 4 physical mPCIe ports too, accourding to system management.

5770 link(model I want, IS out of stock on Newegg): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127490

Thank you for contributing your time, lawler1337 :D

Thanks, lawler1337 :D

Just edit your posts instead of posting replying again. It makes it less cluttered. ;)

You have a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6490m which will die on attempting to BF3

AMD Radeon 5770 will work but on high at 1080p will run at ~35 fps. See Links.

I recommend a radeon 6870 or 6850 or geforce 560. All less than $200. There is a possibility that a 1x speed mpci-e slot will bottleneck the card not providing you with enough bandwidth.

560: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814133397

NOTE: WWAN mPCIe slots with only USB pins connected (pin 36+38) rather than PCIe pins (23, 25, 33, 35) cannot do a eGPU. Check your computer.

You need to buy separate monitor.

With PE4L you need to cut the end of the PCI-E slot, not worth saving $20 cause you might break the pins.

You'll want the PE4H-PM3N ver2.4 Package Contents. Buy a suitable PSU like 400w or something.

Let me know if you need more help.
