The machine runs its operating system, while using software to (badly) create and translate the environment of another machine, and then there's the actual game on top of that.

The machine runs its operating system, while using software to (badly) create and translate the environment of another machine, and then there's the actual game on top of that.

 

Which... demands very powerful hardware. If you want to run... say, a PS3 game, you'll need some very powerful hardware. You'll probably need a hex-core CPU.

If the hardware is completely unrelated the power needed is estimated to be 10 times higher than on the original hardware.

 

IIRC some things are easier, like emulating GBA on certain smartphones because they're both running on an ARM7.
