Let's imagine there's a cartoon called "X".

If I create an online game based in that cartoon where I get profit (in-game items or advantages for who pay), will there be any problems with copyright?

And if I create an online game based in the same cartoon where I don't get profit (or only profit of ads)?

I would imagine that if you used their content and stated who owns it and who created it and backed it up with links and such and added that with a notice that any donations/money you receive goes into hosting the webservers or help to run the game and you're not doing it for profit, then you might be fine

You could also go one step farther and ask for permission first, lol

Explain that you don't want to make money from it (lie or not) and credit will be given

 

If that doesn't work, just get money from ads and claim it pays for website hosting costs, lol

 

(I'm not a lawyer, might want to look this up)

If you use a licenced product to make money with it without paying the company that make this product then this is totally illegal no matter what you say, still if the game is totally free and that you don't make money with it or well money to get the servers up with ads (if your game require servers), I think this might be legal in certain conditions.

depends on how you use this money and how much money you get, also depends on the country you live I guess

It depends on what the license allows you to do, if the license says that you may use it in any way, whether it be commercial or non-commercial, there won't be a problem. If the license says you may use it in a non-commercial way and you want to use it in a commercial way, you'll have to ask permission to use it in a commercial way.
