So since I got my new PSU and GPU I've been playing games a ton. And it's awesome, but since the very first day I started playing my PC started auto shutting down on me when I play graphically intense games.

 

I downloaded software that tells my CPU temp and then I started up BLOps.

The temp crept up and up, to 46c then I stopped the game, so I could write this thread.

I'm using a stock cooler, my CPU is AMD Athlon ii x2 260.

Can CPUs auto shutdown computers if they get too hot?

Your PC will usually shut down if the CPU reaches 70C. Check your BIOS for some temperature threshold setting.

nothing wrong with them, at least on the intel side. now the 22nm crap might've fucked them up more recently however

I haz a stock cooler, temperature never goes more than 46, and that was after playing BF3 on Ultra for atleast 30 min.

Check your temperatures for your motherboard and graphics card as well, try a different PSU as well. Just in case there's something wrong with your current PSU.

70C isn't that high, it will usually shut down at 95-100C.

my readings exceeded 100 degrees C today, and no thermal shutdown. I'd assume the readings are broken, however.

Hence the reason why I added "usually" instead of "always" or something similar.
