This horse has probably been flogged enough by now, but still:

My setup:

I-5 processor

Gfx - Nvidia 560 Ti

Internet connection (as reported by speedtest)

cable, 8 Mbit down, 0.5 Mbit Up

My ping in the game is 57 to 90 (depending on the server)

In absolutely all servers, I have this strange lag - I take aim at somebody, unload 10 bullets, that somebody turns around and kills me with two bullets - this is what I see in real time. The killcam shows that I haven't even taken aim before I died. The problem persists even when I downgrade my video settings to the barest minimum, and when I turn off all other services that may be using up my throughput - antivirus, firewall, other programmes.

Any ideas how to solve this?

I played with no lag but now i have that lag same like Zero....so explane that....if is my network why i have this problem now and didn't have it from beggin'?

Because maybe your ISP is a complete shit?

To OP and the guy above: These "strange" lags you speak of have nothing to do with FPS, so lowering your settings won't help at all. It's just your ISP lagging like hell and/or pingspiking.

I am aware they have nothing to do with FPS, I just stated everything I have done to try and solve the problem. IN any case, pretty soon (week or two) I plan to switch to a symmetric 50Mbit optic, and if the problem persists, it will be shift-delete time.

OK. Update:

This morning I've replaced my cable net with 50Mbit fibre optic. Speedtest net told me that the DL speed is the advertised one, while the UL speed is 45Mbit. Ping test told me packets are lost, and there is no jitter at all.

I did just a brief test with the game (had to leave for work), and in those 5 to 10 minutes I was not able to see any improvement concerning the problem above.

So, now that I have (by all Gods of reason) eliminated the "extremely fucked up, shitty, bad bad bad ISP" factor, are there any things that I am missing.

Do I have to forward some ports (I have no clue about this, only some vague understanding that I do not need to do such a thing just for playing on a server) change some other settings, buy a router made of carbon-coated unicorn, etc.

Any help is welcome!

Thanks

Stop the offtopic stuff.

Ontopic: Does it only happen in IW5M, or are other games also affected?

I apologise for the all caps thread title. Caps lock was probably on when I posted it, and I admit I had no clue about that rule. Will not do it again.

To answer the question above - Yes, this seems to happen only in IW5M. I don't have the same problem on Tekno, and no such problems on Quake (3 and 4 - these are the only other games that I play online).

I am not sure how relevant it is, but I have also tried the cl_maxpackets and com_fps ideas, as well as experimented with packetdup values (as some Google search results recommended) to no avail.

I find this game (contrary to other episodes of this popular FPS series) to be very VERY influenced by the connections of the players in the server. I haven't done serious research on the matter, but it seems that if there's just a few above 200 ping or too many above 150, the whole server drops on the floor. I once joined a server while downloading at around half of my total speed and the game was really unplayable (as unplayable as when a server is about to crash on IW4m), and everyone else in the server also started complaining about insane lag.

In short, I don't think it matters how good your ping is, what matters is how bad other players' pings are.

So always assume that what you see others doing is what they were doing 2 seconds ago. I think this is just how the game plays with medium-high pings on the server.

I would've wanted to try and make a server with a limit of 120 or 150 ping for players (as well as noHC and noFaceOffMaps ... ah that would be nice =D), but I don't have a server and a home-hosted one doesn't seem like a good idea on IW5m.

But I'm relatively new to IW5m and I see that this is not common knowledge, so I might be wrong.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Your 2 cents are definitely worthy mate:)

Yes, I understand your point, but as someone with admin rights on a server, I was (still am) able to kick anyone above ping 100 just to test this, and with the previous ISP it did not help at all. I will check it later on today to see how it will behave with the new net (my apology to all players who shall be kicked in the process, but a man gotta do what a man gotta do xD).

"Lag compensation". Blame ATVI

Well that's just lovely. So what now? I suppose I should get a Pentium III and downgrade my net to 1 Mbit (but somehow not "shitty") in order to be able to enjoy the game? The geniuses should have at least made available a cvar as timenudge in Quake (though it has been misused to greta extent) so that we can try and do something about it client-side.

They made the whole game aroung matchmaking (console players)

So, they don't give a fuck about dedicated servers.

Lag compensation makes sense on matchmaking, wich is crappy home-based hosting. But it's a major fuck up in dedicated servers (just the way they wanted it to be)

Just another brief update - the net upgrade has actually made things worse. Now I have ping 25 on some servers and I can't even see the players who kill me (I see them quite well in killcam standing right in front of me and pumping the annual world production of lead into me).

So, I guess next step is to dig out a dial up modem and then go pro ;)
