Okay, so here are the steps to creating a private match...

>Instructions for Private match

1) Make sure both you and your friend(s) have IW4M.

2) Whoever is gonna be the host, must go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ And write down your IP at the top for later.

3) Now that you have your IP address, have the host whose IP you have just looked up go into IW4M and start a private match with whatever settings.

4) Have you friend type in his console... (Be sure to remove the <>'s)

connect :28960

5) Your friend should automatically connect to your private match and you guys can play.

6) Profit.

>Instructions for same network or house

A) Make sure both you and your friend(s) have IW4M.

B) Whoever is gonna be the host, must go to command prompt (Windows Key> Programs> cmd) and type in...

ipconfig

C) You must now find something that says " IPV4 Address " . Next to it will be an Internal IP . Write down your internal IP for later.

D) Now that you have your internal IP address, have the host whose IP you have just gotten, go into IW4M and start a private match with whatever settings.

E) Have you friend type in his console... (Be sure to remove the <>'s)

connect :28960

F) Your friend should automatically connect to your private match and you guys can play.

G) Profit. (Screen Shots provided by Alexe below)

Make sure port 28960 is forwarded, otherwise you may try a different port.

If this is wrong in anyway, feel free to correct me and I will update it.

I think that iw4m will not work offline because it tries to contact the np server every time you start it.

It's open source, use your brain.

don't be so evil.

And yes, I use my brain to make many things, like favela multiplayer.

Me and my friend did exactly like the tutorial, but he got the message: can't connect to host.

You don't have to connect to yourself. You shoud just start the "Private Match" and your friend should join with your IP. Tried it today and it worked ;)
