I downloaded the SKIDROW version of mw2 and installed fDO but it says i need it on steam. Is there any way to get past this?

Yes, you download steam, make an account, and then you buy the game.

Kind of defeats the "legit" aspect of IW4M, doesn't it? In my eyes that workaround is just a reason for Actavision to keep on doing what they're trying to do now (taking down and claiming stuff).

its not fault of the project itself if some bad cracker cracked the code to disallow authentication....the project itself do not incourage piracy....
