why are we censoring acronyms?

'CoD' and 'MW' aren't copyrighted - Call of Duty and Modern Warfare are.

(italics for non-censoring)

No, as "Call of Duty MW3" is a trademark, it is on the edge to use MW3. Same goes for MW2 obv

no, using "modern w4rfare 3" in a post goes under fair use.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. В§ 106 and 17 U.S.C. В§ 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

Although that be true, said censoring of words does not and can not differentiate between the purposes of use, as branding may be involved, being an infringement of aforementioned copyright. Therefore we must maintain such censor of words, for the cases in which said infringement does occur must be prevented.

I did it in nice lawyer language, because I knew it would otherwise be overruled by dot's lawer-y copy-paste ;p

If you use IW5 as a brandname for iw5m, it is copyright infringement. That is what it said..

So naming the project IW5 is infringement..?

How so?

If I trademark the phrase "you will have a good time"

others can definitely use phrases like "a good time" without any infringement

trademark =/= copyright

A trademark, trade mark, or trade-mark[1] is a distinctive sign or indicator used by an individual, business organization, or other legal entity to identify for consumers that the products or services on or with which the trademark appears originate from a unique source, designated for a specific market,[2] and to distinguish its products or services from those of other entities.
Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it

also, even if you did try to copyright the phrase "you will have a good time" (which isn't really how it works, copyright is automatic), the copyright is invalid because it is not original.

Yes. Though the titles are probably not trademark registered but copyright registered. If you got a definite answer on that, we could use it if it is labeled as a trademark.

"Modern Warfare" is a registered trademark by Activision.

MW3 is funnily enough a trademark registered by some belgian guy, so that shouldn't be an issue, atvi couldn't possibly claim it

And how about the IW5 IW5M series and such?

Опубликовано:

Those are not registered, as far as I know. I am sure about iw4m/iw5m, because they have never been used outside aIW/FDO. IW4 stands for Infinity Ward 4 (obv), but I wasn't able to find a registration of it, or IW for that matter.
