that you're advised to spend ~100 hours on (solely the pupil's work about their chosen topic - little teacher input)

that seems like such horrible garbage that makes no sense at all, no guidance whatsoever

I think it's to show how independent the student can be. I'm not taking one myself though, lol. Quite a few people at my school do, however.

expected it to be for such a reason, but what kind of flippin' useless topics do people even find enough stuff to spend time and interest on

unless they're people who themselves are like overachieving and manage to focus on everything

That EPQ is the certificated one though, which is just like a normal A-level, so the number of hours put in is expected.

At my school, however, we do an internally marked extended project, which is much more relaxed.

It's only 4000 words, and we had ~6 months to do it (though I still haven't started mine, and it's due in 2 weeks).

This is the reason I started the thread, how do you avoid this kind of situation?

Very simply do it about a month before time.

A project where you have 2 months to do it try to finish it (at least ) 3 weaks before you have to turn it in .

Stick to schedules like that .

When I have a week long project i tend to finish it when there are 2 days until i have to turn it in . Simple don't procrastinate and keep to a schedule .

Can't do that ? Well sucks to be you .

If you lack discipline no advice or drugs are going to help you .

Get your teachers to give you deadlines in which you have to hand in parts of the project.

Dunno. Random stuff. One guy's doing it on the effects of ecstasy. He's a tad weird though.

only 4000 words? I have never done a single writing of even 1/16th of such length without running out of things to write halfway in.

Well your personal statement that you write to get into uni is only 4,000 characters!

But seriously, English GCSE coursework was like 1,000-2,000 words if I'm not mistaken.

So considering an EPQ is a whole AS grade (whereas one piece of coursework was worth maybe 10% of a GCSE?) it's really not that much at all.

In order to get a decent mark, it's not "how much shit can I blog to fill the word count", it's "how can I remove enough words to fit in more information".

[lots of pink stuff]

well I guess you'd slowly get trained for such writing during the long-ass education run in such cases though

True. At GCSE History even, you'd have a two hour exam at the end of the year and you'd need to write non-stop to get above a B. Which is why revising (Hi, OP) is such a big deal, lol. In an exam you can't sit around and have a think for five mins to get something else to write about.

That said, however, time allocation depends on the subject. Our science papers tend to be a mark per minute, and I find I have a fair amount of time to check my answers after an exam.

I find that reading helps more than teachers; english teachers nowadays teach mostly literature.

Then again, checking science answers doesn't really mean you'll pick up on wrong answers easily. You either know it or you don't, and normally you seem to convince yourself that all your previous answers were correct, leading to repeat skims over your answers and going 'Yup, 100%.' - sometimes horrifically backfiring and leading to me having to retake my Chem AS Unit 1 as I got 80/100 whereas in all the past papers I got 95-100/100, the expected mark for Unit 1.

Its chemistry. You wont need most of that anyway (well, unless you want to do that shit as a job, obviously). So why the hassle?

Wrong - if you study medicine, biology, physics or anything comparable, you will need chemistry.

Edit: At least in europe it's that way.

But not all of it.

?

do you want me to change the word censor table to allow utf8mb4 and add that shitty excuse of an emoji codepoint to it?

?

inb4 'what a huge square', learn to use Windows 8 (or 7 with the emoji font update), and use IE/Firefox as Chrome somehow breaks here

Depends on the subject and on the amount of people applying.

If no one but OP applies to oxbridge and OP gets 1 E then no one will be getting offers to oxbridge.
