Well, IW5M is not that good itself. But nowadays its almost unplayable. Thats why.

I've set it to 20 just for testing. Also this requires patching the server and client, for now I've only done the server part (as you can see in the snippet above 20 clients connected successfully). The reason I chose to 'start' with this on MW3 was probably because I've worked more with MW3 than with MW2 (reversing), although it shouldn't be a problem to adopt it to MW2 (that's also planned).

Thought I would provide a status update here; I'm still working on it.

 

I'm mostly interested in how much can you increase sv_maxclients

Currently I can increase it up to around 30clients until I reach the limit for child0/child1 variables (which can be patched ofc but is hard). After that limit I know of another one which is around ~70 (3bytes lea cmd, etc.). And the third would be 256 (2bytes push cmd, etc.).

 

So first the good news:

 

Working:

  • Run server with increased maxclients (server)
  • Join server with increased maxclients (client)
  • Play with more than 18 clients (client)
  • Kill player > 18 (client)

 

Not working:

  • Clients > 18 are invisible (client)
  • Scoreboard only shows 18clients (client)
  • Menu sometimes handles weird (client)
  • Occasional crashes (client & server)

The 'Not working' list is ordered in its priority.

 

After it's working the todo list will be (in its priority):

  • Clean up code
  • Make code better readable
  • Test and adapt to IW4M

 

And lastly NTA will add it to the full release.

Nice work, I'm sure a lot of servers would be interested in this if this was published to the actual IW5M client, but how would you do that?

It's still interesting to see how it works, and it would be a real test on how spawns and other systems would work with extended client numbers. Also, we haven't actually tested any of the games with the amount of clients being noted as possible in this topic, so we really can't say that.

Well, some IW3 maps like Crossfire were playable. And of course, you have the new maps/weapons coming to IW4 :P

well nobody likes 64 player metro in bf3 yet people host it, just because they can

 

hell, even with 18 players iw5 maps are meatgrinders with retarded spawns.

 

IW4 would be more appealing, with Rush concept for example
