the primary problem with full open-source code releases and the ensuing forks-without-improvement is that it causes a) community separation, B) lack of control over the main public branch (especially important due to client/server compatibility), c) various support issues because people all assume it's 'the same game' , and some more stuff I likely forgot to mention.

 

Anyway, certain components may be released as open-source in the future, the SVN will continue to be maintained, and custom client DLLs are still possible if you sign the code with a certificate valid according to the local Windows certificate store.

So is it possible right now to make a custom dll? (if yes, may someone point me into the right direction, how those windows certificates work?) or will that follow with new revisions? (in that case, take your time)

 

btw, I do understand point a,b,c, but your real problem is, that custom dlls are getting released to the public, because everybody building custom dlls should know, what he is doing. I would suggest, that you add a little check to test, if the dll is custom or not and display a little warning message on startup (like with different servers on alteriw.net some time ago). Easiest way would probably be an sha1/md5 check, that could be added to the libnp.dll or something, although I bet there are nicer/cleaner ways to do that. (Would also obviously easy to bypass for people, that want to claim it as their own work, but would probably help the normal user to understand, what using a custom dll means.)

I have exported required data from dll / certificate... right click new iw4m.dll you will see digital signatures click details > view certificate then switch to details tab you will see copy to file button. use it... you can also use install button in first tab of last window...

 

but i couldnt find fkng project designer and signing tab in vs2010 :evil: searching that noob page for hours... -.- what a noobish thing.

 

after all you should search for 'private build'... you will see some ids... add yours too... (else your game will quit)

should work the same for iw4m.dll; you can add the signtool as a post-build event

it apply any other certificate but not 4d1's one... so i have created cer and added to trusted root etc etc it worked... :/

Might i suggest adding a feature for individual game servers to accept developer's certificates so that you can allow for modded dlls only if you want to.

 

They acceptin' as i know... (Not tested too long... But entered WZ and played like 10 min. about 1 hour ago...)
